Resize an image without uploading it
When a form already named the size, open Resize Image. Guessing the pixels is how the form rejects the file, or how the picture gets stretched to the corners.
The form already has a size
Your photo usually does not match that size. The usual sites ask you to upload the photo before they will resize it. I would not do that with a scan of an ID, a passport-style photo, or a picture of a child. The resized file is not worth a copy on a machine you do not control.
It stays on this device
Resize Image keeps that work in the browser. The photo is not uploaded. The privacy page states the same rule. There is no account in the way.
The frame modes are Fit, Fill, and Stretch. Fit keeps the whole photo inside the frame. Fill covers the frame. Stretch pulls the photo out to the corners.
The presets are for government and exam portals. A preset is the size that portal asks for, and this post does not list the names. The controls stay locked until a photo is dropped. A portal preset locks the mode to Fill and the file to JPEG, and it aims about 2 KB under the portal's cap. It does not promise the file lands under that cap.
A new file, not a replacement
The resized photo is a new file. The one you dropped is still on the device. If the crop took off the top of a head, you still have the original and you can place it again. That is the advantage. The portal gets a file that fits, and you keep the photo that does not.
What to do next
Resizing does not remove a location the camera stored in the file. Use Remove EXIF before a photo of home, or a scan of an ID, goes into a form. If the file is still heavy after the resize, use Compress Image. If you need a mark on a proof, use Add Watermark before you crop, so the crop does not cut the mark off.
JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and AVIF are listed. HEIC works when the browser can read it. If it cannot, convert with HEIC to JPG first. Those bytes stay on the device.
How to
- Open Resize Image. Drop the photo. The controls stay locked until it is in.
- Take one path.
- Portal. Pick the preset. It locks the mode to Fill and the file to JPEG, and it aims about 2 KB under the cap. It does not promise the file lands under.
- Your own frame. Pick Fit, Fill, or Stretch. Do not also pick a portal preset.
- Download the new file. The original photo is still on the device.
- If the camera stored a place in the file, open Remove EXIF before you upload it anywhere else.
